Driving band protector BL 5.5in gun - firing of the last rounds 5th January 1995, Larkhill

The iconic BL 5.5in medium gun gun was introduced during the middle of WWII to replace the 6in 26cwt howitzers in use since their introduction during WWI. The 5.5 quickly proved to be a very capable gun gaining a great deal of respect. Retained by the Royal Artillery post war, it was employed on operations in Korea, South Arabia and Borneo. Thereafter, for many years it continued in use for training purposes at the Royal School of Artillery at Larkhill. However, as parts became scarce and ammunition nearly exhausted it ceased to be viable to keep it in service.

As a fitting tribute to its distinguished career, the retirement of the 5.5in was officially marked with a one day event hosted by the 34 Seringapatam Battery RA 14 Regiment RA at Larkhill on 5th January 1995. The programme of events and this driving band protector from one of the last shells ever fired in the UK were given to a colleague who attended the event.

Cabasset sml.jpg

Miniature cabasset helmet

A handmade half-size reproduction of a late 16th century cabasset helmet with typical brass rosette rivets and steel faced leather ear protection. Shaped so that sword blows would glance off, the cabasset was worn by foot soldiers from Italy, Spain and France in the second half of the 16th century and throughout the 17th century. The name is Italian and means ‘pear’ - the curious little point on the top is supposed to represent the stem - its real function is unknown. ‘Rustique’ aged finish.
