Winchester display rack

The following wording stamped into the reverse:

MANUFACTURED BY GATES, INCORPORATED W. PETERBOROUGH, N.H.03468 © 1975 GATES INCORPORATED

Pleasing rustic pine plaque made for Winchester, their prominent logo stamped into the surface and infilled in black to create the look of having been branded with a hot iron.

The natural form of the antlers gives the impression that this could be used to display two rifles or shotguns. However the antlers are simply held in position with brass wood screws and our feeling is that this was intended purely as a decorative item rather than a practical way of storing heavy guns.

Certainly eye-catching, this was utilised as an attractive display item in a retail environment for a number of years and in itself is a perfect example of iconic wall art. We hesitate to say rare, but this is certainly an uncommon item.

Overall condition is very good, however there are two minor issues: There is a 'spare' hole in the wood (not particularly noticeable) which was probably added by a previous owner to incorporate another screw into one of the antlers. Secondly, the back of the antlers extend slightly further than the rear surface of the plaque which means when hung it doesn't fit flush to the wall. There are hanging slots on the back to accommodate screws or hanging brackets etc.

Souvenir vases - pair 1930s Hastings.jpg

Pair of Art Deco fan shaped vases - A present from HASTINGS

Ceramic vases with circular backstamp “Made in Czecho-Slovakia” dating from around the 1920s/30s and produced as a standard shape for varying design themes to be applied, such as floral patterns etc. This desert theme can also be found on other pottery items and has been referred to as a nativity scene, but may possibly have been influenced by the huge worldwide interest in the discovery of Tutankhamun’s tomb in 1922. Interestingly, these examples have been customised into becoming holiday souvenirs for that most famous of English seaside towns which gives its name to the Battle of Hastings in 1066.

Some loss of gilding to the mouth on each vase but otherwise in nice vintage condition with no chips or cracks. One backstamp is faded but legible. Probably quite scarce, particularly being a pair in good condition.

Super Materiam Ignis Triumphans - Fire Triumphs Over Materials

Possibly dating from the 1930s, this heavy and unusual item is manufactured from a non-magnetic white metal with an applied 'antique' copper finish. Signs of use commensurate with age including light surface scratches, pitting and abrasions, particularly on the base, but nothing that detracts from the fabulous look.

Jan Kors Smit (pictured) established his company in the Netherlands in 1888. It is still in existence and operates worldwide. During WWII, with the help of British Army Intelligence, two company employees helped to smuggle industrial diamonds out of German occupied Netherlands to prevent them falling into enemy hands and thereby strengthening their position in the war. The 1959 movie ‘Operation Amsterdam’ is based on this event.
